The Four Stages of Alchemical Process for the Achievement of the Philosopher’s Stone

The first stage is known as the nigredo, or blackening. In this stage, the base metal, also called the "materia prima," is subjected to intense heat or fire until it is reduced to a blackened, charred substance. This process of decomposition and putrefaction is necessary to break down the impurities and imperfections within the metal, and it represents the beginning of the purification process.

The second stage is called the albedo, or whitening. This stage involves the merging of two opposing principles, or coincidentia oppositorum, further down the road to be coagulated. In this stage, the blackened substance from the previous stage is transformed into a white or silver-like material, representing the purification of the base metal. This process is often associated with the transformation of the raven into a dove, which were both symbols used to represent the first two stages of the alchemical process.

The third stage is known as the citrinitas, or yellowing. In this stage, the white or silver-like material from the previous stage is further refined until it takes on a yellow or gold-like hue. This stage represents the culmination of the purification process and the attainment of a higher state of spiritual awareness. It is often associated with the transformation of the dove into a phoenix, representing the rebirth of the purified substance.

The fourth and final stage of the alchemical process is called the rubedo, or reddening. In this stage, the purified material from the previous stage is subjected to a final round of purification and refinement until it takes on a red or ruby-like hue. This stage represents the ultimate achievement of the alchemical process, the creation of the philosopher's stone, which is said to have the power to transform base metals into gold, cure illness, and confer immortality.

To better understand these stages, it may be helpful to consider some real-world examples. One such example is the process of refining crude oil into usable gasoline. In the first stage, the crude oil is subjected to intense heat and pressure to break down the impurities and imperfections within the substance. In the second stage, the refined oil is further purified and transformed into a white or silver-like substance, much like the albedo stage of alchemy. In the third stage, the refined oil is further purified and transformed into a yellow or gold-like substance, much like the citrinitas stage of alchemy. Finally, in the fourth stage, the purified gasoline is further refined and transformed into a high-quality fuel that can power engines and machinery, much like the rubedo stage of alchemy.
