Discernment
Discernment, also known as spiritual discrimination, is the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood, good and evil, and what is beneficial versus what is harmful for oneself and others. It is an important quality for anyone seeking spiritual growth and enlightenment.
Many ancient texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible, speak of the importance of discernment. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna that one should use discernment to determine what actions are righteous and what actions are not, saying, "When your intellect has cleared itself of the delusion of ignorance, you will be able to discriminate between the things that ought to be done and those that ought not to be done." (Chapter 2, verse 52)
Similarly, in the Bible, it is written in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
One way to develop discernment is through the practice of mindfulness, which involves being aware of one's thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment or attachment. This can help one to identify negative thought patterns or behaviors and make conscious choices to replace them with positive ones.
Another way to develop discernment is through the study of spiritual teachings and the guidance of wise spiritual teachers or mentors. This can help one to gain a deeper understanding of spiritual principles and develop the ability to discern which teachings are true and beneficial.
It is also important to use discernment when sharing spiritual knowledge with others, as not everyone may be receptive or ready to receive it. As the Tao Te Ching says, "Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know."
In summary, developing discernment is essential for anyone seeking spiritual growth and enlightenment. By practicing mindfulness, studying spiritual teachings, and using wisdom when sharing knowledge with others, one can cultivate the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood and make choices that are beneficial for oneself and others.
